탁심교회에서의 오후
한달동안 금식을 하는 라마단 기간때문인지 오늘은 교회가 한산하다. 매주 토요일 오후 2시부터 5시까지 서울의 명동거리같은 이스탄불 탁심에 위치한 한 교회건물에서 전도예배를 드린지가 거의 2년이 되어온다. 특히 어제 예수님께서 십자가에 달리신 성금요일을 지내고 내일 부활절을 기다리는 가운데, 오늘은 알리목사가 더 복음적으로 설교를 한다. 예배가 끝나고 듬성듬성 들어오는 사람들과 대화하기 위해 교회 입구로 향했다.
한 고등학교 여학생과 남학생이 같이 들어온다. 그리고 예배당 의자에 앉아서 여기저기 주위를 돌아본다. 나도 모르는 사이에 내 발걸음은 그들을 향하고 있었다. “안녕하세요? 여기에 처음으로 오셨나요?” 간단한 인사 후에 대화를 이끌어 가려고 하는 데, 그 여학생이 조심스럽게 입을 연다. “사실 기독교에 대해 알고 싶어서 왔습니다. 학교에서 숙제로 기독교에 대해 리포트를 써내라고 했습니다.” 전에도 몇번이나 중고등학교에서 기독교에 대해 알아오라는 숙제로 학생들이 교회로 찾아오곤 했었다. 그리고 오늘이 또 그날이다. 그런 숙제를 내는 학교 선생들이 터키에 있다는 것이 놀랍기만 하다.
나도 그들의 옆에 앉았다. 고등학교 12학년 학생들이고 여학생 이름은 D, 남학생 이름은 S였다. 복음을 천천히 전해가는 데, 내가 하는 말을 녹음할 수 있냐고 물어보며 전화기로 녹음을 시작한다. 복음을 전하는 30분 동안 여학생의 눈은 한시도 나를 떠나지 않았다. 본인은 무실론자라고 말하는 여학생에게 우리를 찾고 계시는 창조주를 만나는 것을 포기하지 말라는 권고로 대화를 마쳤다. 감사의 말과 함께 그들은 서서히 교회건물을 빠저나갔다. 비록 몸은 피곤하였지만 집으로 돌아오는 발걸음이 예수님을 전하는 기쁨 가운데 가볍기만 하였다.
Afternoon at Taksim Church
The church was quiet today, perhaps due to the month-long Ramadan period. It has been almost two years since evangelism worship was held every Saturday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm in a church building in Taksim, Istanbul, like Myeongdong Street in Seoul. In particular, Pastor Ali preached a more evangelical sermon today while celebrating Good Friday yesterday and waiting for Easter tomorrow. After the service, I headed to the church entrance to chat with those who came in sparsely.
A girl and a boy in high school ages entered together. They walked to a chair to sit on, looking around here and there. Soon, I found my steps heading toward them. "Hello? Is this your first time here?" After a brief greeting, I started leading a conversation with them. All of a sudden, the girl cautiously opened her mouth. "Well, I came here because I wanted to know about Christianity. Our school teacher asked us to write a report on Christianity as a homework assignment." Several times before, middle and high school students would come to church with homework to learn about Christianity. And today was another day. It is surprising that school teachers give such homework in Turkey.
I sat next to them. They were 12th-grade students; the girl's name was D, and the boy's name was S. As I explained who Jesus is, they asked if they could record what I would say. Upon my permission, they started recording on the phone. For the 30 minutes I shared the gospel, the girl's eyes never left me. She said she was an atheist. I ended the conversation by encouraging her not to give up on searching for the Creator, who is always reaching out to us. With words of thanks, they slowly left the church building. My body was tired, but my steps back home were light, filled with the joy of sharing Jesus with young people.
터키 지진 업데이트
지난 2월6일에 일어난 지진으로 5만명 이상이 사망하였습니다. 하타이 지역은 진원지에서 좀 떨어져 있는 곳이지만 2만명 이상이 사망하였고, 특히 하타이의 안타키아 (성경의 안디옥) 도시의 건물들의 80%이상이 무너졌거나 크게 손상되어 새로 건축을 해야하는 상황입니다. 안타키아에서 23년전 교회를 세우고 섬겼던 현지목사는 다음과 같이 말합니다.
“안디옥은 더 이상 남아 있지 않습니다. 그러나 새 안디옥이 있을 것입니다. 그리고 교회가 더 튼튼히 세워질 것입니다.”
이번 지진구호를 위해 많은 교회들이 터키를 마음에 품고 기도와 물질의 후원에 동참하였습니다. 지진구제 사역은 사실 지금부터 시작입니다. 지진피해자들에게 소망을 심어주며 그리스도의 사랑으로 그들을 섬기는 일을 위해 계속적인 기도를 부탁드립니다.
Türkiye Earthquake Update
More than 50,000 people died in the earthquake that occurred on February 6th. The Hatay region is far from the epicenter, but more than 20,000 people died there. In particular, more than 80% of Antakia (Biblical Antioch) buildings in Hatay collapsed or were seriously damaged, requiring new construction. A local pastor who founded and served a church in Antakya 23 years ago says as follows.
“Antioch is no more. But there will be a new Antioch. And the church will be rebuilt stronger.”
Many churches joined in prayer and material support for this earthquake relief with Turkey in their hearts. The actual earthquake relief work starts now. We ask for your continued prayers to share hope with the earthquake victims and serve them with the love of Christ.

Türkiye Election
Turkey's presidential and general elections will be held on May 14th. The pro-Islamic regime, which has been in power for more than 20 years, is losing support due to economic difficulties and its slow response to the earthquake. Please pray for a fair election and stability after the election.

제가 가르치고 있는 대학의 졸업생인 한 젊은이를 정기적으로 일대일 멘토링을 하고 있습니다. 젊은이들 가운데 주님을 따르는 많은 제자들이 나올 수 있도록 기도부탁 드립니다.
